With the Grammy's occurring just last Sunday, the nation enjoyed hearing music from their favorite artists. However, with "Slumdog Millionaire" winning best picture last year, many have taken an interest in following foreign artists from various nations. Looking for something new from another culture, check out some of these artists.
South Asian music consists of spiritual and cultural expression. Many instruments include pluck string and wind instruments. Best known artist in the Indian world is Asha Bhosle, a woman with fame in Bollywood that holds the record for most recorded songs in history with over twelve thousand songs. She is also the first Indian artist to be nominated for a Grammy. Her versatility ranges from modern pop to traditional classic folk songs, as well as performing in various languages. Some of her music was heard in the drama "A Mighty Heart." Although she is currently 76 years old, she still has sweet vocals.
Traveling to Mali, in Western Africa, instruments including drums, harps, and string instruments create mostly blues, jazz, and rumba styles which journeyed into American traditions. Habib Koite, Mali's most popular recording musician, plays the guitar and with his smooth voice a tidal wave of tranquilizing tone is composed. Habib Koite's hit songs include "Din Din Wo" (Little Child) and" I Ka Barra" (Your Work).
Rising from the flames is the Parisian band Phoenix. Forming in the suburbs of Versailles, the members created their alternative rock group and debuted their first album "United" in 2000. Their latest tracks from "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix" have been used in movie trailers and car commercials, particularly the popular "1901." Thomas Mars provides the lead lyrics while the rest of the group includes bass guitar and keyboard as heard in their songs. Their latest album was nominated for the Best Alternative Album Grammy of 2009. Other tunes include "Girlfriend," "Lisztomania"" and "Fences."
Russia mostly listens to Western styles throughout their regions. The most internationally successful Russian group of all time named t. A.T.u, meaning "This That." Forming in Moscow, this girl group creates high beat music to energize those that hear it like "Not Gonna Get Us." Some of their hits have a softer ring like "30 Minutes" which uses piano music. The group is currently on hiatus this year while some of the members pursue solo careers.
