Why students aren't clipping coupons to save on groceries

Being a college student is expensive on its own, but adding the cost of living and weekly grocery bills to school costs can make the college experience very costly.
Each week, companies offer numerous coupons to consumers in an effort to encourage them to buy their products, and test out new ones. While coupons are readily available and can help cut back on grocery bills, Weis store manager, Brian McGarvey, said that he does not see many college students using them.
With the state of the economy, McGarvey said that he has seen an increase in the use of coupons compared with a few years ago. When asked about the huge savings that have been reported by the media, he said, “Maybe if you spent 40 hours a week clipping coupons and searching online and comparing circulars, and lived in a town with more than one grocery store, you could save a lot. But I don’t really think that is realistic here.”
Laura Godfrey, who is also a sophomore without a meal plan, also does not use coupons. “I know it could help me save money, but I just don’t have the time to compare prices, and coupon clip. I’m too busy with school.”
According to McGarvey, coupon clipping isn’t the only way to save on grocery bills. Instead of coupon clipping, “students could save more money by signing up for the Weis Club Card.” The Club Card is free, and offers savings on certain sale items each week. McGarvey also said, “The items on sale each week are the things I would buy while I was in college.”
Coupons can be used with the Club Card, for bigger savings.
Although coupons do not seem to be very popular among college students, they are available in the Sunday newspaper, and online. There are several online sites that offer coupons, and also tell consumers which store has the particular items on sale. Some of the most popular sites include SmartSource.com, CouponMom.com, Coupons.com.
