Teachers and customers have been donating money to Avenue 209, a coffee shop located on Bellefonte Ave., which has been helping to raise awareness for Haiti the first few days after the disaster. Local bands are performing shows at the coffee shop and all proceeds go to the cause.
"We encourage everyone to donate and help in the relief. Even though we're a small coffee shop, we want to change the world," said James Reyes, a student at Lock Haven University and a worker at Avenue 209.
On Feb. 13, Jared Conti, an LHU and Avenue 209 worker, will perform with his band, The Jared and Anthony Show, at the coffee shop with all donations going to the American Red Cross.
Also, $1 million will be given to the American Red Cross by Starbucks Corporation.
"We are devastated by the recent loss of life caused by the earthquake in Haiti," stated Howard Schultz, chairman and CEO, Starbucks Coffee Co. to the Starbucks Newsroom on the company's website. "We feel a tremendous sense of urgency to respond to the humanitarian crisis."
"The generous support of Starbucks, and so many of their customers, will reach the lives of survivors in Haiti, providing help and hope," said Gail McGovern, President and CEO, American Red Cross to the Starbucks Newsroom. "The Red Cross is grateful for this global outpouring of compassion, and we encourage people to continue their support for Haiti because the need is so great."
Donations began January 18 at participating 7,500 Starbucks stores. Customers can donate up to $249.99 in the U.S. and Canada, with no purchase necessary.
The location in Williamsport has so far raised $517.45. Even though Lock Haven is not accepting donations at the store, students and the costumers are encouraged to give in any way possible by visiting www.RedCross.org.
Donations can be tax deductable, but Starbucks cannot provide a receipt for in-store donations. If you need a tax receipt, visit the American Red Cross website.
