Another fast-paced, fun, and epic year at Lock Haven University is about to end very soon. Some students are graduating this December and leaving with many memories. So much has occurred through school in 2009. Let's reminisce.
At the beginning of this year, Lock Haven was hunting a new provost to fulfill the position. After Dr. Roger Johnson was set to retire after being the chief executive officer and interim vice president for Academic Affairs, the school was in search of his soon-to-be replacement.
Thirty applicants were gone through in order to determine who would take the responsibilities in this career. It was pursued later this year by Deborah Erickson who still works hard to oversee issues occurring at this institution.
In February, Gay Straight Alliance members Sam Williams and Vanessa Dettmore traveled in a Chrysler caravan with two other friends to University Park in order to protest Proposition 8. They did not once let the bitter winter temperatures keep them from standing up for what they believed in. Williams commented, ""I was excited to partake in such an event that I feel so strongly about." The battle to legalize same sex marriage continues to this day across the nation.
The economic hardship the country was facing, and is still facing today, was addressed to students when the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Chancellor, John C. Cavanaugh, visited the university. PASSHE had financial struggles within its system, but they were not as terrible as other state systems in America.
To save money, they bought products in bulk and lowered energy consumption by installing more energy efficient light bulbs, printers, and other devices. Today, the PASSHE's main concern continues to be the students. Like Cavanaugh stated "You must protect your core mission within an organization." The mission is still the opportunities given to the students as they attend their state school.
Lock Haven University musician and student Brian Shultz triumphed at the "Rock the Haven" tournament this October at local coffee house Avenue 209. He impressed audiences with originals and ended with an intro to his new cover by the much loved group Dave Matthews Band. With the prize of a Tascam DP-02 digital recorder, Shultz can now make incredible recordings of his musical talent.
