Roses are red, some diamonds are blue … if you love poetry, then Lyrically Speaking is the group for you.
There are numerous clubs here on Lock Haven's campus that appeal to almost all students' majors. Whatever your passion may be, there's definitely a group for you, and if not, students can start their own.
For poetry enthusiasts, there is Lyrically Speaking. A spoken word group where the most lyrically inclined people come together to share readings, Lyrically Speaking was started WHEN?
"We are a group that has a lot of variety to it," Lyrically Speaking president Stephanie Reynolds said.
The advisor, Dr. Laurie Cannady, writes a lot of short stories of her own. There are also musically-inclined people in the club. Poetry is usually the main focus.
According to vice president Leo McNeil, Lyrically Speaking is a diverse group with members that span all cultures and backgrounds. The group is an outlet for Lock Haven students to express themselves through the art of spoken word.
"To me, it is a way that I can share, learn, and build on my art as a lyricist," McNeil said.
Each semester, the group puts on various events for the Lock Haven community. The events range from simple poetry readings to amateur open mic nights. The club even has special guests come in to perform.
Lyrically Speaking put on four events total last spring semester. Their open mic events encourage anyone from Lock Haven to put on a good show for the crowd. Lyrically Speaking also put on a special Valentine's Day event called "Making Love with Lyrically Speaking." Near the end of the semester, the group had special performers from Def Jam Poetry come to perform at East Campus for the group.
Many events are planned for this fall semester and the upcoming spring semester.
"This year we plan to hold a special lyrical talent show where we will be giving out great prizes to the winners," McNeil said. "In December, we will be having an event called Lyrically Speaking Presents: Top Lyricist."
