The LHU field hockey team (18-5) ended their season Tuesday, when they took a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to host, American University, in the NCAA Division I play-in match for the second year in a row.

The Haven did walk away this season as the Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament champions for the fourth straight year, after beating Monmouth in the final round.

In the NCAA play-in match, Anne-Meike DeWiljes opened the scoring for American University in the 35th minute. AU took the 1-0 lead into halftime, but approximately 10 minutes into the second half, Christine Fingerhuth tacked on another point.

LHU, down 2-0, finally answered back in the 51st minute when sophomore forward Kristi Shepps put one past AU goalkeeper Alyssa Poorman. Shepps tried to give LHU the victory with her match-high four shots, but unfortunately could only put one past Poorman.

Lock Haven goalie Erin Terreson, despite the two AU goals allowed, still put forth a great effort making six saves. The Lady Eagles were outshot 12-8; AU also had eight shots on goal while LHU had three.

Before the match against AU, the Lady Eagles played through the NEC Tournament where they had the number two-seed and first downed Quinnipiac (6-12) in the semi-final match and then and then Monmouth (9-12) in the championship game.

The Haven first beat Quinnipiac 2-1 in the semi-final match. LHU started the scoring off quickly when Offensive Player of the Year, Amy Hordendorf, put one in the net only 10 minutes into the game.

NEC Tournament MVP, Suzann Hobart made it 2-0 in the 21st minute when she scored off an assist from senior Megan Albert.

Quinnipiac's Kristin Engelke got the opponent into the game when she scored in the 59th minute. The Haven's defense held on for the rest of the game, with help from Terreson, who had three saves in the match. LHU outshot the Bobcats 16-10.

In the championship match, LHU shut-out Monmouth 2-0 for the conference title. The first half was scoreless, but Shepps tacked on a goal in the 51st minute off an Alanna Lewis assist, who was named the NEC Defensive Player of the Year for the third consecutive year.

With just over two minutes left in the game, Hobart put home another goal to give the Lady Eagles the victory. Terreson had three saves in this match as well.

The Haven dominated the game, outshooting Monmouth 13-6.

The field hockey team ends their season with an overall record of 18-5, and also a phenomenal 7-1 record in the NEC. Since 2004, when the team came back to Division I play, they have gone 45-3 in the conference.
