Lock Haven University's track and field teams hosted their annual Fall Shoe Sale Oct. 14 at the Thomas Feildhouse from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The shoe sale was a benefit for the Track and Field Scholarship Fund, and a portion of the proceeds will go to the Brian Keefer Medical Fund.

The Brian Keefer Medical Fund was established by the Keefer family to help pay for Brian's medical expenses.

Keefer was a student-athlete on the track and field teams until the summer of 2008 when he received a spinal cord injury while doing some gymnastics tumbling. He became paralyzed from his injury, but is currently regaining feeling and movement in his upper arms, shoulders, and back. This fall, Keefer returned to LHU as a full time student and is still recovering from his injuries but is confined to a wheelchair for the time being.

"He's a brave young man who our teams continue to support through various efforts, including shoe sales and our cross country teams' annual run-a-thon which was held in September," said Aaron Russell, the Track and Field co-head coach.

The sale sold many famous brands such as K. Swiss, Adidas, Sketchers, Nike, and Reebok. There were mainly sneakers, boots, and some sandals but students and faculty could also purchase clothing such as Nike jerseys and Reebok shorts.

"We sold over 200 pairs of shoes at this fall's sale, which was one of our highest tallies ever," stated Russell.

The shoes are brought to campus by a company based in Lancaster who buys the products in bulk and sells them at least 50 percent off retail prices or less.

The Fall Shoe Sale has become an annual event on campus with the support of the campus community. With each shoe sale, the Track and Field teams divide the money earned with a charity. In the past, money was given to the local women's shelter, the Tiger's Den Playground, a local child with eye cancer, and an LHU staff member's family who lost their home to a fire.
