The Lock Haven University SCC is holding a food drive to help those less fortunate in the community.

Lock Haven University's Student Cooperative Council (SCC) will be collecting canned goods and other non-perishable food items on campus during the month of October.
The items collected will be donated to the local Salvation Army and Women's Shelter. With the recent economic hardships, the SCC sees this as a perfect opportunity for LHU students to give back to the community that invites them in each year.
"Participating in this event is a chance for the students to really connect to the community that does so much for the university as a whole," said SCC President, Chris Lunden on the importance of the food drive for the relationship between the LHU students and community.
The SCC is also trying to encourage clubs and organizations on campus to participate by creating a competition within this act of charity. The SCC is pushing the competition by awarding the SCC club or organization with the highest total of cans collected with $500 to be deposited into their Special Account, while second place will receive a prize of $200. Lunden describes the competition between the clubs and organizations as a "win-win situation." The food drive will also get a boost in numbers from the competition because all clubs wanting to participate in the contest is required to give 100 cans to enter.
"The SCC giving away prize money for the most cans collected is definitely a great incentive for the clubs on campus. The extra money will give the two winning clubs the ability to do things that they weren't able to before," said sophomore, Travis Kolovich, who is also a member of the Scuba Club.
Lunden also cites some recent events that have caused the community to look poorly on the LHU students. He believes that this event is a great chance for LHU to show their true colors and help the community out in the hard times.
"With some bad PR out lately, I feel that this is the perfect project to show the community that the students of Lock Haven University do care about everyone and the town itself," Lunden said about the repairing the image of the LHU students with the Lock Haven community.
The SCC's executive board created the can drive as their special project for the fall semester and it has been received nicely by the student body.
"I think it's a great idea that LHU is giving back to the community. It's a nice way o saying 'Thank you' for all that they do. Can drive away," said Health and Physical Education major, Dave Lagerman on the university giving back to the community.
The SCC will have two dates that clubs, as well as individuals, may drop off their food items. The first one will be on October 14, and the second one will be held on October 29; on both dates, items may be dropped off at the Parson's Union Building from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
"I'm all for it, get out there and can drive-away," said Lagerman.
