Students will soon have a chance to race for a cause with the sixth annual John Schroder Physician Assistant Student Society (JSPASS) 5K race that will take place on April 4.
Each year the Pennsylvania Society of Physician Assistants (PSPA) chooses a different charity to benefit from the race.
Each Physician Assistant program in the state then competes against each other with the goal of donating the highest amount.
LHU's society, JSPASS, has raised the largest amount of money for the charities chosen in the past two years.
This year, the chosen charity is 'Sister's Place' in Pittsburgh.
'Sister's Place' was founded in 1993 by a group of 14 Catholic religious communities. With a goal of helping those who cannot help themselves, 'Sister's Place' provides single parent families with supportive services and housing.
"We like to give back to the community that supports us," said Daria Indeck, president of JSPASS.
Currently, there are 50 participants signed up to take part in this race for a good cause; however, more are encouraged to join.
Students may sign up at the student recreation center, in room 227 in the Health Professions Building or online at www.havenconnections.com.
There is a $12 registration fee which will benefit 'Sister's Place' in Pittsburgh.
T-shirts are available to participants while supplies last.
"Students should take advantage of this opportunity because not only should it be a lot of fun, but it benefits a really good cause," says Indeck.
The race also promotes the LHU P.A program at the state conference, and prizes will be given for those placing.
Sponsors for the JSPASS 5K race include Reed's Custom Awards & Framing, Steinbacher Orchards, Scot's LoCost, West Coast Video, Unkel Joe's Woodshed, Burger King, Arby's, WBPZ 92.1 The Mountain, Lock Haven University PA Program Faculty, Papa John's, Hangar 9, Main Cheung and Rock River and Trail.
JSPASS is also in the process of collecting used cell phones and canned goods to help benefit Clinton County Women's and Children's Center.
"As their student faculty advisor, I am so proud of their contributions, not only here on campus but also to the surrounding communities. It certainly shows their dedication to the school and also to our profession and I feel this will continue for years to come," said Lane Bower, faculty advisor of JSPASS.
