This weekend not all of the members of the track and field teams were in action at the Susquehanna Invitational, but those who were there still showed why both teams are ranked within the top 10 in the latest NCAA Division II track and field power rankings.
The Lady Eagles are ranked fifth nationally with 221.16 points, while the Bald Eagles are currently ranked sixth with 241.30 points. Both teams are ranked first in the PSAC and the Atlantic region.
To solidify their position in the rankings LHU currently holds several individual conference marks as well as all three relay events, 4x400, 4x800 and distance medley relay (DMR). Both men's and women's teams are ranked sixth in the DMR.
"It feels really good, that as a whole we are ranked nationally because of our collaborative efforts and not just a few people," said pole-vaulter Phillip LaBelle.
At the Susquehanna meet both teams continued to show why the track and field teams are ranked so high, earning 15 PSAC qualifying marks. The women's team earned 10 qualifying marks the men's team earned five.
Leading the way for the Lady Eagle's team was three-time All-American Chelsea Morse, who was recently named the PSAC field athlete of the week. She took first place in both the women's long jump and high jump.
Morse got first place in the long jump with her jump of 5.16 meters. In the high jump Morse cleared the bar at five feet seven inches. Her final height was almost six inches more then Juniata College's Kelsey Buffenmyer, who came in second.
The triple jump was a particularly good event for the Lady Eagles, as three of them placed within the top 10.
Kristie Warren was the top performer in that event for LHU as she took third place with a distance of 10.56 meters. Lauren Edelman and Cassie Snider took fifth and sixth respectively in the event.
Aside from her qualifying mark in the triple jump Warren also did well in her other events.
"My events went well, but there's always room for improvement. I qualified in the 55m which was probably the high point of my day," said Warren.
In the women's shot put and weight throw everyone from the Lady Eagles finished in the top 20. In the weight throw Jenny Scheler finished seventh with a distance of 12.77 meters. Karisa Bowersox placed 10th in the shot put with a distance of 10.47 meters.
