Students encouraged to apply for scholarship

The Lock Haven University Foundation is proud to continue their tradition of releasing their annual scholarships and awards.
The Foundation's Scholarship Program takes place during the spring semester and offers recognition and financial assistance to eligible students.
The Foundation manages contributions from alumni and friends in order to distribute over 100 scholarships totaling up to $800,000 in past years.
Booklets containing the description of the different scholarships, the criteria and an application can be picked up at the Durrwachter Alumni Conference Center, Stevenson Library or Parsons Union Building.
Applications can also be obtained online at www.lhup.edu/foundation/scholarships/index.htm.
There are several different types of scholarships available.
In the Arts and Sciences area, scholarships awards are divided by subject area including art, biology, business administration, English, foreign language, history, journalism, mathematics, music, nanotechnology, psychology and sociology.
There are 28 awards open to both men and women athletes.
There numerous awards available in the Education and Human Services fields including early childhood education, elementary education, health/physical education, nursing, physical education/health Sciences, secondary education, special education and international education.
"Students should have received an e-mail from their major department, and they are encouraged to contact the department chairperson for specific application procedures and department deadlines," said Mary-Kate Rounsley, executive assistant to the vice president of University Advancement.
"These scholarships are selected by a department committee that establishes their own policies and deadlines," she added.
Applications for the General Foundation Scholarships must be completely filled out and taken to the Student Financial Services Office in Russell Hall no later than Friday, Feb. 20.
These scholarships are managed and selected by a Lock Haven University Foundation committee.
Recipients of this year's awards will be recognized by the Lock Haven Foundation during their Academic Honors and Foundation Awards Convocation that will be held at 7:30 a.m. on April 15.
The recipients must attend the Convocation and compose a letter of appreciation to the donor to receive their scholarship.
Parents are encouraged to attend, but if unable, recipients are allowed to bring up to two mentors to the ceremony.
