For the third time in the history of the Lock Haven men's wrestling program, the Bald Eagles (0-0 EWL, 0-1) faced off against the University of Missouri Tigers (0-0 Big 12, 2-0), on Saturday at Thomas Fieldhouse. This time the results didn't go in LHU's favor as they fell to the No. 5 Missouri Tigers 32-9.
"We wanted our team to go out and fight and they did. We were very competitive in eight out of ten bouts. It was a great crowd and an exciting match for the fans," said Coach Rocky Bonomo.
Missouri's lineup featured five wrestlers ranked in the top 10 within their respective weight classes.
Lock Haven's Nick Hyatt started things off for the Bald Eagles. Hyatt, wrestling in the 125 weight class, handed Mizzou's Troy Dolan his first loss as a starter. Hyatt attacked early, scoring two points off a single leg takedown followed by two back points. After scoring five more back points his aggressive wrestling led to pinning Dolan 2:29 into the match. With that pin the Bald Eagles took an early 6-0 lead. Hyatt was also named the Eastern Wrestling League(EWL) wrestler of the week.
The Bald Eagles next win would come six matches later in the 184 pounds match. Tom Kocher faced off against Missouri's Dorian Henderson. Henderson led 4-1 after the first three minutes of the match, Kocher fought back to tie it at five points a piece at the close of the second period. Kocher then went on to dominate the rest of the match scoring four unanswered points and taking the victory.
While the Bald Eagles were only able to win two matches they stayed right in the thick of all the other matches, keeping pace with some of the best wrestlers in the country.
In the 157 pounds match Luke Lanno took on No. 10 Emanuel Brooks. After the first two periods the match was tied up at two before Brooks scored three points with an escape and takedown. Lanno was only able to score two more points before falling 5-4.
The next match featured John Mangini taking on the No. 1 165 pound wrestler in the nation, Nick Marble. Mangini fought hard in the match and only trailed by five points after the first period, but Marble maneuvered an escape six seconds into the second period and tried twice to pin Mangini. Marble eventually got the pin and gave Missouri the victory.
