The final match of the night was the heavyweight bout that saw Gabe Murtorff take on the No.10 ranked Dom Bradley. Bradley led for 5-2 after the first two periods. Murtorff fought back and scored four points, but it was not enough for the victory as he fell 8-6.
Two of Lock Haven's national qualifiers from last season, Billy Ashnault and Matt Fittery, were in action against Mizzou.
Ashnault was up first in the 133 pound weight match. He took on Todd Schavrien. After the first period Schavrien led 6-2, but Ashnault came back and fell by a single point making the final score 7-6.
Fittery wrestled the Tigers Andrew Sherry in the 149 pound bout. Sherry, a Pennsylvania native, won the match 8-5. From the start Fittery did his best to get Lock Haven the victory. He scored a takedown to start the match, but fell behind 5-3 after the first period. Fittery was only able to tack on three more points before the end of the match. For the Bald Eagles if they hope to send some wrestlers to the NCAA tournament the match against Missouri was a good test, as the strength of schedule will play a factor into wrestlers looking to compete in the National tournament in March.
"It shows our team that we can compete with anyone. Our guys main gains and go better," said Bonomo.
Lock Haven will look for their first win as they travel to New Jersey on Friday to take on Rider University. The Broncos have six returning national qualifiers including All-American Don Fisch. Rider will also feature the No. 6 184 pound wrestler in the nation, Doug Umbehauer.
"Should be a competitive match and gives our NJ (New Jersey) athletes a chance to go home and wrestle," said Bonomo.
This will be the 19th time these two schools will have met, their first since 2003. Lock Haven has won 16 of those meetings. The last time LHU lost to Rider was back in 1997. The match will begin at 7 p.m.
