"It feels great, both of those teams had beaten us earlier this season and we gave them both a great game. They were two of our biggest away games and we came out on top," said Courtney Johnson of the defense.
In their most recent game against California the Lady Eagles shutout the Vulcans 2-0. The loss was the first for the Vulcans in the past nine games.
The Lady Eagles jumped to a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute after Kellie Wieger set up Carly D'Orsaneo, who got it by the Vulcan goalie. Lock Haven would hold the lead for the rest of the half and would add to it in the second half. Janine McCarthy scored off an assist from Alissa Gamelier for the eventual game winner.
While the offense worked hard to get goals for Lock Haven, the defense shut down the Vulcan's offense. Goalie Haley Zinn made 12 saves in the match. Caitlyn Slattery provided strong support on the defense to help secure the victory.
In order to get the win over Mercyhurst, the Lady Eagles would have to battle into overtime.
Lock Haven would strike first. 5:49 into the game, LHU's D'Orsaneo scored the first goal after a loose ball off a corner kick. While Lock Haven held the lead for the rest of the first half, Mercyhurst would tie it up in the 60th minute.
With the overtime period starting it would not take the Lady Eagles long to get the winning goal. A mere five minutes into the overtime period LHU's Johnson scored the winning goal.
While Johnson and D'Orsaneo along with the other Lady Eagles offense played well, the defense led by Zinn and Wieger helped secure the victory for the women."Winning is such a fulfilling feeling and our team has worked really hard, so it was a nice reward," said Midfield/forward D'Orsaneo.
Lock Haven will look to continue their winning ways as they finish their final regular season away game at Clarion.
"This is a big game considering we beat them already this season we can back down or get big heads about this game. They are also the team that hurt our freshman keeper and put her out for the season, so we are out to win 'Go hard or go home,'" said Johnson.
Head Coach Heather Davis shared her feeling about the game, a she said, "Every PSAC game will be a tough battle. There is a great familiarity when you play every team twice each season and it generally comes down to which team plays the best on the given night. I am confident in our team and that we'll be successful if we put a good product on the field."
Lock Haven will then start the first of their final three games at home on Friday against Edinboro. For some of the players these will be the last games played here at Lock Haven.
"I am really excited to have my last three games at home. It means a lot to have my family and friends there for my final games," said Blessing
