On Monday the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) released their annual Top 10 winter sports athletes and LHU's own Matt Fittery was named to the exclusive list.
He was the first and so far only Bald Eagle Athlete to make the list this year.
"He is a great representative of the wrestling program and university. Matt is the kind of person that you build your program around," said Coach Rocky Bonomo.
To be named to the PSAC Winter Top 10 caps off a spectacular season for Fittery.
To officially end the season Fittery was one of three Bald Eagle grapplers to go to St. Louis for the NCAA National Division I wrestling's championships. In the NCAA tournament Fittery won his opening match in the 149-pounds weight class and unfortunately he fell in his next two matches.
Fittery's list of season accomplishments for the season also includes being a runner-up in the PSAC wrestling championship.
He also finished fourth in the Eastern League Wrestling Championship as well as posting a team high 24 wins for the season. He did this while maintaining a very high GPA.
"Matt is a great person, student and athlete. He comes from a great family that supports him and our program. He works very hard on and off the mat," said Coach Bonomo.
Fittery is a two time PSAC Scholar-Athlete.
The Top Ten Awards are given to student-athletes who distinguish themselves in the classroom and in their arena of competition. The athletes chosen are selected by the PSAC's Sports Information Directors. The conference designates Top Ten Award winners after each of the sports seasons: fall, winter and spring.
In order for an athlete to be considered for the Top Ten Awards, a student-athlete must have a least a 3.25 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or be a key reserve with legitimate athletic credentials.
To be considered for the winter Top Ten Awards student-athletes must compete in one of the following sports: wrestling, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's swimming, and men's and women's indoor track & field.
