With the season officially over for the baseball team, the whole team can look forward to improving for next year -- most of the team, that is.
Two Bald Eagles took the field at Foundation field for the last time this past Friday as Lock Haven began their weekend series with Shippensburg.
Pitcher Pat Young and third baseman Tim Bremen were honored before the start of the first game as the only two graduating seniors on the Bald Eagle squad. The team will miss the veteran leadership that Young and Bremen brought to the team.
Coach "Smokey" Stover talked about the careers at Lock Haven when he said, "Pat came a long way from his freshman year. He had a pretty good career at LHU, but some arm problems held him back a little. He didn't complain and just threw with the pain. Tim transferred to Lock Haven and played third base for us the past two seasons. Tim was great to be around and was a good leader. We will miss them both."
Young took the mound for the Bald Eagles in game one. Young now has the fourth most starts in Lock Haven baseball history. Young recorded two K's in the first game. The two strikeouts gave young a career total of 184, the fifth most among Bald Eagle pitchers.
The Bald Eagle bats just weren't connecting in either game as the recorded a total of nine hits in both games, while getting shut out 9-0 in the first game and then 5-0 in the second to #3 ranked Shippensburg. Sophomore Mark Strouse got three hits on the Friday, one in the first game and two in the second game.
The two games at Shippensburg didn't go in LHU's favor at all as they lost both 10-3 and then 9-2. In the first game the three runs came off of nine hits. Freshman Kevin Kochka led the way for the Bald Eagles going 2-2 at the plate and driving in a run.
In the second game sophomore Evan Petro took control at the plate for the Bald Eagles as he went 2-4 and scored a run.
Despite having a improved on last seasons record many feel this season was a disappointment with how the defense wasn't always there to help the pitching. But there were some definite improvements coming from this young squad.
