Both the men's and women's track and field teams were, once again, on the road this past weekend for the Big Red Outdoor Invitational, hosted by Cornell University and the Penn Relays, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.
Ranked fourth in the country, Ryan Blood, shattered yet another school record in the 5K event.
His time of 14.02.49 was good enough to earn him a ninth-place finish in the event while breaking the pre-existing school record by 16 seconds.
"Blood showed why he ranks first in the conference," said Head Coach Aaron Russell. "The Penn Relays are a big deal in track and field and he went out and ran as best as he could."
The surprise of the day came from the 4x400 team of Alyssa Douma, Alaina Leonard, Angela Pierce and Amanda Reinmiller.
With a season best 3:59.55, the team took home first-place in the event.
"They're ranked fourth in the conference," said Coach Russell. "They knew what the potential they had and proved it at the Relays."
At Cornell, among many strong performances, Greg Mock's first-place finish in the 100 meter dash led the way for the first of three Bald Eagles first-place finishes on the day.
Mock's time of 10.97 was good enough to beat out Shamel Lewis of Syracuse in the 100.
Not satisfied with the victory, Mock also added a third-place finish in the 200 meter dash at a time of 22.33.
"Cornell was really good for us," said Coach Russell. "We had six new qualifiers as a result of the meet."
Paul Martin, ranked sixth in the country, continued the men's success with a first-place finish in the 400 meters hurdles and a second-place finish in the 110 hurdles.
Martin's times were 52.32 and 14.82, respectively.
Rounding out the men's side for the day was Nick Hilton with a second-place finish in the 1500 meter run at a time of 3:57.45.
Not to be outdone, the women's side turned in some impressive performances as well.
Leading the way would be Kami Roth (ranked second in the conference), with a first-place finish in the javelin with a mark of 131-01.
"She barely missed a national qualifying mark, so hopefully she can improve at the upcoming meet," said Coach Russell.
Malika Miller, following Roth's lead, took home second in the triple jump with a leap of 37-11.25.
Teammate, Shala Simms, also had a strong showing with a third-place in the 400 at a time of 59.67, and a fifth-place finish in the 1500 at a time of 4:53.97.
Wolf and Leonard would round out the day for the women as Wolf took fourth in the 400 at a time of 59.95, while Leonard, ranked fourth in the conference, took fourth in the hammer throw with a mark of 151-00.
Leonard also took fifth in the discus with a throw of 124-00.
Both the men's ad women's track and field teams will be in action starting this upcoming Thursday at the PSAC Championships hosted by IUP.
