After two consecutive Mondays and Tuesdays of surveying, the Wellness Center and Safe Haven are preparing to compile the data they gathered regarding LHU students and alcohol use.
The survey was open to all LHU students over the age of 18. In order to capture the widest sampling of students there were stations set up all over campus. Each of the residence halls was given 75 surveys for each week of testing. There were also surveys at Evergreen Commons, Raub Hall, Ulmer Hall, Bentley, the PUB, as well as on North Fairview Street and near the stairs from the commuter parking lot. Many of the sports teams on campus also helped out by surveying their athletes in team meetings.
The 21-question survey which dealt with students alcohol use in the last seven days took two to three minutes for students to complete. The first several questions identified who was taking the survey by asking questions about sex, age, major, group affiliations and so on. The remaining questions inquired what kind of alcohol students consumed, how much and how often over a seven day time period. Questions about consequences and motivation were also posed to students. For completing the survey each student was given a Drinking and Driving calculator as well as a Guardian Angel Personal Alcohol Test.
This year marked the third time the survey was given. The data from the 2003 and 2005 surveys are currently available in a pamphlet.
In the past two studies there were nearly 1,000 respondents. This year, because of more surveying stations around campus, Max McGee, the director of Safe Haven and the Wellness Center, is hopeful that the number of respondents will jump to around 2,000.
The survey given this year was identical to the two prior years with the addition of four questions concerning alcohol use before coming to LHU. The survey has stayed the same because using the same questions allows those who compile the data to correlate between years.
This study is unique because it was done almost completely by students and interns from the idea stage to final production.
