Joan Welker, the director of Career Services, will be hosting informative workshops concerning resumes, internships and interviews that are open to all students. All of the workshops will be held in Raub 425 and begin at 7:00 p.m.
On Tuesday, Feb. 13th Welker will present 'Writing the Perfect Resume'.
"The resume is your chance to promote yourself to an employer," said Hannah Thompson, a peer career facilitator at the Career Services Office.
Welker will cover important sections of the resume, including identification, education and experience. She will also cover what activities and memberships set students apart from each others.
Some tips Welker tells students are not to use resume templates, but to work from scratch and that in most cases for new college graduates, one page resumes are sufficient. It is recommended, however, if a resume is longer than one page to include your name on the second page.
Toward the end of the resume workshop, Welker will also talk about cover letters, which accompany resumes.
Cover letters serve the purpose of introducing yourself to the employer by telling them why you are writing and what contributions you believe you can make to their organization based on your qualifications.
If students have a resume, they are welcome to bring it along to the workshop to be critiqued afterwards.
'Internships: What? Why? When? How?' will be presented on Tuesday, Feb. 20. Welker will cover every aspect of the internship search from determining whether or not an internship is right for a particular student's needs, locating opportunities and selecting the best internship.
"Internships are a great way to gain experience in your future job field," said Thompson. "They can be very valuable because you may have a better idea of exactly what you want to do once you graduate."
The final presentation is 'Interviewing to Win' and will occur on Tuesday, Feb. 27. Basically, during a job interview employers are looking for the answer to one important questions, "Why should I hire you?"
Welker's presentation will include three parts to the interview, preparation, the four stages of interviewing and the follow-up.
During the preparation stage students get to know themselves by analyzing their strengths and weaknesses, among other things. They should also do research on the organization they are interviewing with and project a professional image.
The four stages of interviewing are reception/acceptance, information exchange, your turn and closing. During the workshop Welker will go into detail about the four stages.
The final stage of following-up is important because "it leaves a positive impression on the employer," said Thompson.
Students may also schedule mock interviews with Welker for extra preparation.
As usual, students are welcome to visit the Career Services Office in Akeley 114 to receive information on the topics above and many others, such as; graduate school, dressing for interviews and how to use the Career Library.
