Instead of letting a PSAC loss affect their playing, the LHU volleyball team competed in a tournament at Shippensburg this weekend and left the two-day event with a record of 4-0.
"I think the loss gave our team inspiration for the tournament," said sophomore Stacey Borgia. "We knew that we had to pick our game up and play our best. We always want to be at the top, and we can't afford losses."
Inga Kurgonaite agrees with Borgia.
"I think the loss was a wake up call for us, and that we need to work harder and play better as a team if we want to win this year," said the junior.
On Saturday, the Lady Eagles beat both West Virginia State University and Fairmont State University in straight sets.
Senior Li YiZhi led the team against West Virginia with 14 kills, hitting .346. The middle hitter also had eight blocks. Opposite Inga Kurgonaite recorded 12 kills. Freshmen setter Fabiana Gomez had 38 assists and 6 digs, and outside hitter Christina Laury had 9 digs.
LHU dropped Fairmont State 30-22, 30-14, and 30-20. YiZhi continued her domination, leading the attack, hitting .667 with 11 kills. Borgia had nine kills on .500 hitting.
Gomez and classmate Caroline Acosta had 29 and 13 assists, respectively. YiZhi had seven blocks and Kurgonaite, added four blocks of her own.
On Friday night, the Lady Eagles beat Davis & Elkins College 3-0.
YiZhi tallied 13 kills and three blocks, while Kurgonaite had 12 kills for a .500 attack percentage. Borgia, a middle hitter, recorded 10 kills with a .593 attack percentage.
The second match of the night was against Alderson-Broaddus College and, once again, Lock Haven prevailed, with scores of 30-15, 30-19 and 30-19.
YiZhi recorded 19 kills, hitting for a team-high .680 and five digs. Kurgonaite posted 10 kills hitting for .563. Gomez had 30 assists and nine service aces.
The Lady Eagles improve to 13-4 on the season (3-1 PSAC West), following the tournament and a 3-0 loss against California University (Pa.). The defeat broke a seven game winning streak for Lock Haven.
Gomez recorded 13 assists, seven kills and assisted in two blocks. YiZhi had 10 kills, 12 digs and three block assists.
The Lady Eagles travel to Clarion University this weekend to compete in their tournament.
Borgia predicts the upcoming tournament will have results similar to their last one "if we can keep our team spirit up, communicate and play our best."
"I'm sure we'll be able to do just as well in next weekend's tournament as we did this past weekend," stated Acosta.
On Friday, October 6 the team will play Webber International at 5 p.m. Saturday's matches include a 9 a.m. showdown against East Stroudsburg University and at 1 p.m. the team will take on Davis & Elkins for the second time in eight days.
