College students usually move away from home for months at a time, live with someone they have never met before and meet people with diverse backgrounds. This is very similar to being on The Real World. The only difference is that Real World cast members have their lives taped and aired on national television.
Rachel (Road Rules 11: Campus Crawl) and Ruthie (Real World 8: Hawaii) encouraged LHU students to open themselves up to new people and experiences, while sharing their personal stories from the shows.
Going into the situation, Rachel knew that there would be the stereotypes of the fraternity boy, sorority girl, gay guy, and outcast. After the first day of the trip, she thought she had everyone figured out, but realized after two weeks that no one was like she thought. Darrell, who she thought was a tough, city guy turned out to be the most sensitive guy of the group. Rachel recalled many mornings that they watched the sunrise together. Eric, the frat boy, danced around the RV to wake them up in the mornings while Shane, the gay guy, was the one who was the best competitor in the missions.
"He was the first gay guy who I was close to, so I didn't know what to expect," Rachel said. "I was thinking Will and Grace."
The person who surprised Rachel the most was Kendal, the sorority girl. When asked during her interview what type of person would be the hardest for her to live with, Rachel said Amaya from Real World 8: Hawaii and she assumed that Kendal would be like Amaya. She thought there was no way they could find common ground, but Kendal actually became her best friend on the trip.
The message that Rachel and Ruthie hoped to get across to the audience was to not judge people upon first meeting them, but to get out of your comfort zone and get to know them. Rachel feels like she is still the same person she was before the show, but that the experience has opened her eyes.
"See places you've never seen before and meet people you wouldn't normally meet," Rachel said. "I don't know who I would be if I wasn't on Road Rules."
