HARRISBURG--Dr. Joseph P. Grunenwald, provost and academic vice president at Clarion University of Pennsylvania, has been selected to serve as the university's next president.

The Executive Committee of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education's Board of Governors chose Dr. Grunenwald to succeed retiring Clarion President Dr. Diane L. Reinhard effective July 1. Dr. Reinhard has been president since 1990.

Dr. Grunenwald was named provost at Clarion in 2000, after serving as interim provost and academic vice president for a year. Previously, he was dean of the College of Business Administration for more than a decade. He was initially hired at Clarion as an associate professor in 1978.

"Dr. Grunenwald is an outstanding candidate who has given nearly 25 years of exemplary service to Clarion University," said Board of Governors Chairman Charles A. Gomulka. "The university conducted a nationwide search and it is especially gratifying that the best candidate was found right on campus. He knows the university, he knows the State System, and, best of all, he knows the Clarion students. He is an excellent choice."

"He has been an important part of the Clarion team, working closely with Dr. Reinhard and the other members of the university's administration," Chancellor Judy G. Hample said. "I am confident he will provide excellent leadership to the university as it strives to become an even stronger institution and to implement the Board's exciting new vision of providing students with the highest quality educational experience, partnering with the Commonwealth to help ensure its economic vitality and being fully accountable to taxpayers for fiscal efficiency and program quality."

Dr. Grunenwald said he looks forward to assuming the Clarion University presidency.

"I am excited about being given this opportunity," Grunenwald said. "Clarion University is very important to me. It has been my home for many years. It is a wonderful institution with tremendous potential for continued academic growth. I am glad I will continue to be part of that effort."
